Mother mother

I have no words. 

My heart is heavy. 

The whole thing hurts. 


Another senseless tragedy

Broken hearts

A grieving society. 


We claim to want to make a change. 

We want to see it stop. 

We scream out loud for gun control. 

We continue to watch our children drop.


We offer prayers, condolences.

We rant on public forums.

We blame the gun, society, the shooter, mental health, lawmakers, congress, lack of discipline..

There’s never a decorum. 


With guns we defend our politicians, celebrities, banks, jewelry stores, sporting events, and homes. 

But then we’re quick to offer a solution by a sign that says “Gun Free Zone”.  


There is a great divide it seems.

So many pointing fingers

But as lives are lost, and graves are dug,

The smell of gunpowder lingers.


Mental health is brushed aside,

Although it’s such an enigma.

No one wants to talk about it

Because it carries such a stigma.


"Where were this kid’s parents?!"

"Why didn’t anyone call the cops?!”

“How did he even get that gun?!”

“When is it going to stop?!”


“Bad guys always find a way.” 

“It’s not the person it’s the gun.”

“Who even needs to buy an AR?!”

“All it takes is one."


Mother mother, I hear you crying 

As you drop your kids off at school.

Praying today is not the day

Asking yourself as you wave bye “Am I a fool?!"


Can we get a metal detector?

Can we get an armored guard?

Volunteering armed veterans?

Why does this have to be so hard?


I don’t know the solution.

I don’t know where to start.

For I am just a mother too,

With a heavy heart. 


I know we can’t continue 

On the path that we are on. 

I know that something has to give.

I know we need these tragedies gone.


Change does not happen 

With insults, hate, and shame.

We don’t get a damn thing done

By pointing fingers and passing blame.


Before you spout opinions 

Please educate yourself

Listen and speak with an open mind

Put your arrogance up on the shelf.


We can put God back in school

We can pray until we’re blue

We can say we want to make a change

But ultimately it starts with you.

February Love Yourself Challenge- 28 Ways to Love Yourself More

In order to love, we must first love ourselves.  It's true.  It's so hard to pour from an empty cup.

But how do we fill up our own cup?  How do we love ourselves when there are so many other things getting in the way of truly being able to make ourselves a priority?

Well, that's the thing.  We must MAKE ourselves a priority. It takes time.  It takes a conscious effort.  It takes action.  And it takes the ability to say, I am truly worth it.


If you're struggling to come up with ways to do that, to celebrate yourself, to embrace your worth and to fill your own cup, here are 28 great reminders below.  Feel free to print out this calendar, use it as a reminder, and you can always join our Facebook group for our 28 Days of Self Love Challenge by clicking HERE too.  


28 Ways to Love Yourself More

1.  Positive Affirmations- say 5 things you love about yourself, store them in your phone.  Repeat them or rephrase them every morning.

2.  Write yourself a "love" note.  Open it at the end of the month.  Refer to it often.

3.  Take yourself out to dinner, alone.

4.  Put on your favorite pair of shoes, favorite jeans, and strut.

5. Ask a friend, significant other, child, parent, loved one to tell you their favorite thing about you.  Collect those things and write them down.

6.  Sweat.  Go for a run.  Knock out some cardio.  Lift heavy.  But just sweat.

7.  Take a bubble bath.  When you think it's time to get out, add more hot water and sit for 10 more minutes.

8.  Bake yourself your favorite dessert.  Can't bake?  Find a place that serves it and treat yo'self.

9.  Pray.  For yourself.  For your health.  For your sanity.  Or if you're not a praying person ask the universe to send good vibes your way.

10.  Binge watch a few episodes of something that's going to make you laugh until you cry.

11.  Splurge on the good bottle of wine at the grocery store.

12.  Sit.  Breathe.  Pause.  Stretch.

13.  Throw your earbuds in and listen to your FAVORITE music, uninterrupted.

14. Get yourself a Valentine.  Go big :)

15.  Have a pet?  Snuggle them.  Let them snuggle you.  Without regard.  Don't have a pet?  Go to a shelter, borrow one from a friend, let an old puppy dog love on you for a couple minutes.

16.  Learn how to make a really good & healthy smoothie.  Make one for yourself, drink it.

17.  That painting/music/fitness class you've always wanted to take?  Schedule it.

18.  Give your legs a lotion rub down massage.

19.  Read The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown.  You won't regret it.

20.  Get yo'self a good coffee mug.  One that speaks to your soul.  Sip coffee or tea from it uninterrupted.

21.  Allow yourself a day of slippers and your comfiest sweats.

22.  Send out 5 thank you notes to friends, family, just for being there for you.

23.  Schedule that hair appointment and get it done this month.

24.  Sing in your car.  Embarrassingly loud.  Who cares who's watching.

25.  Light a few candles. Spend an evening without tv or distractions.  Read.  Journal.

26.  Cook for yourself- whatever you LOVE.

27.  Post it notes.  Those things people love about you?  Put them on post its and place them randomly throughout your house, wallet, car, closet, books.

28.  Open that "love" note you wrote yourself.  Tell yourself how incredibly strong, amazing, capable, determined, and beautiful you are.

Egg Roll In A Bowl - DELICIOUSLY HEALTHY

When it’s Saturday night, you drive past the Chinese food place, and think, “Man, it would be so easy to stop here and grab a quick dinner.”...

Then remember that not only does it make you gassy, bloated, and all that sodium does NOTHING but get your wedding rings stuck on your fingers, you go home and whip up THIS!  And satisfy all of those cravings, and don’t have to resort to sweat pants and misery on the couch. 

This was super simple, 10 minutes to make, and makes 4 big servings for an easy meal prep!  Tell me what you think!!

Ingredients:

1 lb lean ground turkey or chicken
1 package cole slaw mix or shredded cabbage 
2-3 carrots, chopped 
6 tsp rice vinegar 
2-4 tbsp coconut aminos 
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp ground ginger 
2-3 bunches green onion, chopped 
Sesame seeds
Sea salt & black pepper to taste 
1 tsp coconut oil

Directions:

In a large skillet, sauté carrot in coconut oil 2-3 minutes.  Add ground turkey.  Season with salt & pepper, garlic, ginger until cooked through.  Add cabbage/slaw mix.  Toss and season with vinegar and aminos x 2-3 minutes. 

Serve over brown rice, rice noodles, or eat plain for a low carb meal.  Top with green onion & 1 tbsp sesame seeds.  Enjoy!!
Serves 4

Chocolate Zucchini Banana Bread Shakeology

Favorite thing about zucchini bread?! There’s zucchini in it so it’s healthy, right?!


Ummmm, no.  Google “zucchini bread”. Guarantee there’s a cup of sugar in most recipes. 


Favorite thing about this zucchini “bread” recipe? It’s actually loaded with a ton of fruit & veg nutrients, plant based antioxidants, and can fuel your muscles too!  


Chocolate Zucchini Banana Bread Shakeology


1 scoop (vegan) chocolate 

1 small zucchini (cut the ends off)

1/2 banana 

1 c unsweetened vanilla almond milk 

Dash of cinnamon & nutmeg

Drop of vanilla extract

Drop of butter extract if you have it!


Blend with ice!!!

Sweet Potato Breakfast Casserole

Some mornings call for breakfast casseroles.  Today was one of those mornings. 

Typically on Sunday nights I pour a lot of time into meal prepping for the week, but last night I was drained, exhausted, and frankly I just didn’t feel like it. 

So after a long, somewhat rested night, I devoted 15 minutes of my morning to prepping breakfast for the week.  

It turned out as good as I imagined. I hope you enjoy it! 

Ingredients:

3 medium/large sweet potatoes, diced 
6 whole eggs + 6 egg whites 
3 c chopped spinach
4 small sweet peppers, chopped 
1/2 c cherry tomatoes, sliced 
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp paprika
Sea salt & black pepper to taste 

Directions: 

Grease a 13x9 glass baking dish with 2 tsp EVOO. Dice sweet potatoes and place in dish.  Cover with remaining veggies.  
In a bowl, whisk eggs & egg whites.  Add seasonings. Pour over veggie/potato mixture.  Bake at 350* for 30-40 minutes until toothpick comes out clean. 

Serve and enjoy. 
Makes 6 (big!) servings.

Superfood Chicken Chili (crockpot)

This soup came to fruition after looking through my fridge/pantry, deciding I needed to go grocery shopping, but with a barfy kid, feeling quarantined to the house, I decided I needed to use up what was left of my previous week’s meal prep/grocery trip first.

Enter: Superfood Chicken Chili 

And let me tell you... this turned out so much better than I imagined!  

This could easily be done in an Instant Pot too- but I haven’t purchased mine yet!

Ingredients:

2-3 medium/large chicken breasts
3/4 c lentils, raw, washed
2 c organic vegetable broth 
1 can organic fire roasted tomatoes 
1 large green pepper, diced 
3 large carrots, peeled and diced
2 c kale, finely chopped 
1/2 c frozen edamame 

Spices:
2 tsp chili powder 
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp cinnamon 
Sea salt/black pepper to taste 

Directions

In a crock pot, place chicken, tomatoes, broth, pepper, carrots, and lentils.  Cook on low 4-6 hours.  Add kale and edamame.  Stir.  Cover and turn to warm for 5 minutes.  

Serve and enjoy!  Can top with 1 tbsp of hemp seeds too!
